The 'Zine

So I'm seriously interested in getting this going, and really getting to work on it once school stuff dies down.

I just want to reiterate some of the ideas I had for the publication on the blog for all to see:

- A showcase of local KC artists, but not necessarily limited to such.
- An emphasis on photography, because of the fact that not many publications (especially around here) are heavily involved with the medium in that sense.
- That being said I also really want other mediums represented, and especially think some creative writing would be nice. (maybe even response pieces from other artists based on some of the work going into the magazine.
- I'm not sure how often we can get this out, especially with most of us still having another year of school left. I'm thinking maybe quarterly for now?
- We need to try to get some sort of sponsorship to help pay for all the costs involved with this. Grant writing may be a possibility, talking to local artist coalitions and foundations, and other kc businesses who may be interested in promoting work like this.
- Also the first series of these will most likely not be printed at nearly the quality I would prefer, but it shouldn't deter us from its creation. Even if we have to do newsprint starting out.

Anyways feel free to add to this list or whatever.

I think this could be an amazing group effort though.

Alex: I really like this idea as well. I'm keen to be involved. I also had a thought when Brandon mentioned the responses from artists or whoever to work in the zine that the format that ummm i think its "Black" zine uses is pretty cool. They have the articles written about the person writing the previous article...does that make sense? so we could all kinda feed off each other too, and other artists etc. Dunno. just an idea.

Collecting for the Collective.

So no one has really done much collective wise. Things have been busy and we all understand.

Lydia and I have been chatting extensively about ideas that we could do for shows. In our discussions we have mentioned appropriating our works together so we can show work and kind of let the collective actually "BECOME SOMETHING"

At KCAI people have been bitching about not having any gallery shows in the PD/F space. We thought that we experiment with collecting mass amounts of a certain media and displaying them all together, along with a joint statement. For example i have an obsession with Cell phone pictures and picture-mailing. So we could all individually print cell phone images and the collaboratively curate a show out of them. Another example could be test prints or practice images, this way people in other medias (graphicdesignBencoughcough) could submit pieces as well. (This is a great way that our foreign members can actively participate too.)

We have come up with some other ideas that could be used as well but pending on feedback to this post, this idea can be pursued more in depth.


ALSO! We have discussed that the publication idea zine, fliers ect... should be better thought out over the summer.

Yo! I like this idea of collecting a big bunch off stuff (cell phone images etc) and curating them into one big show. I also love the idea of collecting lots of peoples tests and scraps and proof sheets. Sometimes these ( or a lot of them) can be better/cooler/awesomer than a finished polished work. Again just putting in my 2 cents but yea. I am planning to send you guys stuff in the next few weeks by the real live physical mail...so it may be a collection of things for this sort of idea. yea. Alex.

Mishca / New Zealand

Hey I'm Mishca, living in Dunedin, New Zealand. I work with Alex Lovell_Smith and Emily (who some of you may have met). Emily and I will have a space (workshop/gallery/gig) sorted in the next month. Everyone is welcome to have work involved in this space if you are interested... will keep you all updated when things start falling into place.

Art/photography to me seems not to be something to define but to interpret, a view or idea of an individual or group. This is not necessarily ‘truth’ or ‘real’, it just 'is'. Does this idea fit in context with a working class society? Generally people won't admit there is more than one way to operate and perceive life.

A direction that could be taken is to create situations where one could force an audience to ‘see’ an object or entity, carefully manipulating the subject matter in a way that forces the creation of thought, reactions, even interactions in an audience that would not have otherwise been stimulated in everyday life.

showing art in foreclosed homes

Luke McKinney has a wonderful idea

what if we teamed up with some real estate agents working on selling foreclosed homes, putting art shows inside these homes that coincide with open houses. we could do this in multiple homes around the city, giving the agency publicity and also ourselves. Luke also thought it would be valuable to get Abe Morell on our side, since he works with rooms and spaces for his giant camera obscuras. that could get the event some serious publicity, as well as the possibility of funding

so let's work on this, guys, because i think it's a swell idea!

we need to have a meeting before Morell talks at the Nelson on Thursday. How about Wednesday after class (2:20) or around 5pm? thoughts?

Just found out this guy (who turns rooms into camera obscuras) is coming to the nelson atkins on february 25th for an artist talk. We should be making sure we go see this talk.

Discussing “like minded” artists, connections between works.
- Art being “cultural criticism” no postmodernism. Who participates… ? no one even knows that its criticism because they don’t pay attention.
- Creating a new movement that is not postmodernism

- We cant define photos anymore than we can define art
Image to reality comparison, if its in a photo it happened, if its in a drawing its fake…
- NOTHING IS REAL, everyone filters differently
- The context influences the reality of something, if its digital its fake ex.
- People say you cant trust a photograph, but you really cant trust the photographer
- You look at photographs to fill the gap of what you cant explain but we cant explain reality?

- We shouldn’t praise “great” artists if we don’t agree with them.

Don’t try and make things match because you can change your self to be what some one else wants. Do your own thing. Being a “technician.” Learning how to light things in a machine like fashion.
The zine doesn’t have to be all photo based, artists in other medias could be involved. And writings can play a large part in assisting our work.

The publication should come out as the same time as the show, because you will be able to use the mag. as a catalog of images and writing featured by the artists of the show. The first addition maybe writings of WHAT THE COLLECTIVE should be, and if it’s suitable maybe those ideas could be published.
